Andrew Douglas Livingstone spent his working life in the Straits Settlements in Malaya.



In civilian life, Andrew Douglas Livingstone was employed in the Straits Settlements Prison Service. In 1918, he was warder-in-charge of Malacca Prisons. On 30 Aug 1919 he was transferred from Malacca to Penang as Acting Gaoler. In 1923 to 1926 he was in charge of Penang Prisons as Gaoler and retired to England on 4 Dec 1926. He was awarded the Imperial Service Medal for his services in 1927.

He also served in the Volunteers, and he was in the Malacca Volunteer Rifles. His number was 221, and he was a Corporal. In his rank he was awarded the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Long Service Medal. Whilst this award cannot be traced in the Straits Settlements Government Gazette, it is recorded in A History of the Singapore Volunteer Corps 1845-1937 by Captain T.M. Winsley (1938) on page 175.
