Remembering Elizabeth Choy, Singapore World War Two Heroine, Singapore Volunteer Corps

Singapore do not have many war hero or heroine, Elizabeth Choy was one of them... She passed away in 2006 at the age of 96.

Singapore Division, Malaya Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (MRNVR) Long Service Medals

Brief History of Malaya RNVR (Singapore Division)

Formed as Straits Settlements RNVR (SSRNVR) in 1934. In 1935, presented with its first ship. "HMS Laburnum", a Flower Class Corvette. Telok Ayer Basin was the HQ of MRNVR (S'pore Div) until 1963. Saw actions during World War 2 and HMS Laburnum was sunk by Japanese cruiser on 13th Feb 44. MRNVR was reactivated after WW2 in 1947 and saw action again during the Malayan Emergency and Indonesian Confrontation. On 14 Jan 56, HMS Panglima was launched by the wife of the Governor of S'pore. On 22 Sep 63, MRNVR was transferred to the Royal Malaysian Navy Volunteer Reserve (RMNVR) after merger with Malaya.

Medals

The S'pore Naval Volunteer Reserve Decoration was instituted on 2 Jul 62 to recognise 15 years' meritorious service as an officer. The S'pore Naval Volunteer Reserve Long Service and Good Conduct Medal to recognise 12 years' meritorious service as a rating or other rank. 

These 2 medals were replaced by the current SAF Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 16 Feb 73.
